UPDATE: Sadly, YouTube has drastically increased the compression they use in the years since this was put up to the point where all quadrants will often look identical even at 1080p (this may be codec dependent in which case some devices may fare better than others, but I haven't tested). I do have a couple screenshots at https://mattgadient.com/in-depth-look... but sadly it's not as helpful as this video was before YouTube went crazy with the compression.

WARNING: This video was created using version 0.9.9 which has since been replaced by 0.10.0. The denoise settings have CHANGED since then. I'll try to get an updated video done with the new stuff at some point, but in the meantime, note that the custom settings mentioned will not work correctly with 0.10.0 and will only work if you're still on 0.9.9 or lower.

Comparing various denoise settings from within Handbrake (the built-in HQDN3D denoiser). I take a look at the "presets", as well as the custom values on both a DVD and BluRay source.

I highly suggest watching in full-screen at 1080p. YouTube's bound to compress at least some of the noise out, so you'll want every advantage you can get to see the differences.

Full write-up with more details (if you stumbled across this video randomly for example) is at http://mattgadient.com/2013/06/29/in-... .

NOTES:
-I did not mention "banding", but it's something to watch for as well.
-If you're having trouble noticing the picture softening/degradation, focus on the "stubble" on the male faces while paused.
-I don't go into chroma/luma testing here. Values are set equally. If you want to read about luma/chroma denoising, details are in the write-up on the website.
-Encodes were done at RF18 (even the "original"). It will have some slight degradation compared to the true source (YouTube's compression will likely further that). Didn't go with RF0 since I'm doing some file size comparisons at the same time and it's not necessary for the purpose of comparison here anyway.
