Running Peak to Peak, Madeira (Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo - and back)

Two of Madeira's most famous, and 1st/3rd tallest, peaks: Pico Do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, connected by PR1 (the trail name), but better known as Peak to Peak.
It's a 5-7km trail, depending on where you start, and takes in spectacular scenery. If you've spent any time on social media, you'll probably have seen clips of 'The Stairway to Heaven' which is close to Pico Do Areeiro. However, the trail has more to offer than just the stairway to heaven.
The biggest problem is that you have to drive to one of the peaks, so if you want to drive away, you'll likely have to do Peak to Peak.....to Peak. If you're walking, it's probably around a 3-4 hour walk, one way. If you're doing both ways, it's a full day trip.
If you are doing both ways, I'd strongly advise starting at Pico Do Areeiro. That's because the car park is right at the trailhead, whereas the car park at Pico Ruivo is a good 45 minutes walk from the peak.
Word of warning, it's by no means flat. In fact, there's almost no flat ground anywhere on the trail. Between the peaks, it descends about 400m in elevation in the first 2.5km and then 400m up in elevation in the second 2.5km. Lots and lots of stairs, but you'll be walking/running surrounded by scenery which the photos and videos do not do justice to.
Whichever way you choose, if you've come to Madeira to do some hiking, the Peak to Peak is a must do. Just take some waterproofs because the weather can change very very quickly!
