Yesterday the Senate Armed Services Committee released their version of the NDAA. It is an 1197 page document. If you follow that link and search for “DJI”, “China”, or “Drones”, you’ll find out that neither the CCCPDA nor the DFR language is anywhere in that bill. That means once the Senate votes on this, it will go to a Congressional Conference Committee to hammer out the differences between the House and Senate version before it gets sent to the President for his signature.
As far as when the Senate will vote on the NDAA is anyone’s guess. They could literally vote on this tomorrow, or the could wait until December. It wasn’t voted on and signed until December in 2023.
There is also pretty solid rumor that they want to wait until after the election so a Lame Duck Senate can vote on it. That can be a good thing or a bad thing.
So at this point, we’re still in a holding pattern until the Senate does something with this bill. So stay tuned and we’ll let you know what happens, and what the next step we need to take is.
Summer is a quieter time in DC, but it’s still important to keep pressing on to make sure that the voices of drone users are heard and taken seriously in Washington and beyond. If you’ve already sent letters through the Drone Advocacy Alliance’s Action Center, thank you! That’s a great starting point, but there are still other ways you can get involved too. Here are just a few ideas:
Reach out to your members of Congress to set up an in-person or virtual meeting with their office – hearing from constituents in meetings can make a big impact on their policy decisions. Members of Congress will be back in your area in August for the congressional recess, which may even make a direct, face-to-face meeting more possible than it has been before.
Consider contacting your local news outlet letting them know about proposed drone restrictions and seeing if they are interested in a story, letter, or opinion column about how you use drones and why you are opposed to legislation like the Countering CCP Drones Act. If you are interested in this option but would like help with the correct contacts or even assistance writing something, let us know and we are happy to discuss and get you what you need.
