The 1857 War of Independence, also known as the Indian Mutiny or the Sepoy Rebellion, began on May 10, 1857, in Meerut, when Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company's army revolted against their officers. The immediate trigger was the use of new rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with cow and pig fat. However, the uprising was fueled by deeper grievances, including resentment over British economic exploitation, land annexation policies like the Doctrine of Lapse, and the erosion of traditional Indian social and cultural systems. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the rebellion marked a significant step toward India's eventual struggle for independence.
