What is a Cloud-Native Application Protection Platform?
Cloud-Native Application Protection Platform or CNAPP is a cloud protection platform solution created to address workload and configuration security. It performs scans during the development and deployment stages and provides protection during runtime. CNAPP protects hosts and workloads, including VMs (Virtual Machines), Containers, and serverless functions.
A CNAPP is made up of a combination of several security, visibility, and monitoring technologies, with the primary elements consisting of CSPM (Cloud Security Posture Management) and CWPP (Cloud Workload Protection Platform). We covered both CSPM and CWPP in more detail in separate videos.
CNAPP is also referenced as CNSP (Cloud-Native Security Platform). While both utilize CSPM and CWPP methodologies, there are some differences that we will cover in a future video.
Why CNAPP?
Major companies have adopted a cloud-first strategy, and many more are considering moving to the cloud. This migration to the cloud has presented them with a new challenge. That challenge is how do we protect and secure their intellectual properties, sensitive data, applications and maintain regulatory and compliance requirements. Traditional software and hardware devices were not designed to protect this modern and agile, continuous integration / continuous delivery (CI/CD) environment.
Security must now be applied at the cloud infrastructure level as well as the cloud application level. So, protecting and monitoring threats of cloud-native applications and services must be performed during the development, testing, deployment, and run stages.
