So, Covid has me crazy and I decided it was a good idea to make a frame by frame #animation for my all time favourite game #TheLastofUs. This has taken months to put together after work, at the weekends, and in between other projects, so I really hope you like it.
If you're interested how it was made:
I made a rough montage in Premiere... and when happy I put it into After effects as I was initially just going to run a sketchy style filter on it in tribute to the original take on me video BUT the testing didn't come out so great and I didn't want the backgrounds on everything so yep, plan B. I changed the frame rate to 8FPS - and exported the sequence as images. Then onto #photoshop.
Even at 8FPS there were 1056 images I needed to process, so rather than doing everything by hand, I used a photoshop action to form the base of each image but this still meant I had to manually isolate each individual image by hand and well, I almost died.
Once I'd done that, I went through EVERY SINGLE IMAGE AGAIN (you can tell I'm pained by the capital letters), but the second time I painted in the additional details that the action missed and sorted out the lighting on the ones which were extremely dark - granted this isn't perfect in all areas but I did my best :)
Once everything was sorted I went to the pub... nah who am I kidding it's LOCKDOWN... I went back to premiere, added the JPGs as an image sequence, did some final tweakytwoos and this is the end result.
I averaged about 10 minutes per image, so 10 x 1056 = 176 hours of work + a couple of hours to create the baseline montage. I'm proud of the end result and glad I did it this way because it also gave me a better understanding of how traditional frame by frame animation works. With that said, I will not be using this exact method again. Ever. I like to work on a variety of things and this has just been a massive time hoover so if I do something of this style again ... processes will be altered.
Until next time :)
