Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) is a measure of the concentration of macular pigment in the retina, particularly in the macula, which is responsible for central vision and high-acuity tasks. This pigment consists primarily of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which are known for their antioxidant properties and their ability to filter harmful blue light. Higher MPOD levels are associated with better visual performance, reduced glare sensitivity, and protection against age-related eye conditions.
Lutein, along with zeaxanthin, cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Foods rich in lutein, such as leafy green vegetables, corn, eggs, and certain fruits, may help increase MPOD levels. Supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin has also been shown to boost MPOD, potentially enhancing visual function and providing a protective effect against AMD. Therefore, a diet high in lutein or appropriate supplementation can play a critical role in maintaining eye health and preserving vision, particularly in populations at risk for macular degeneration.
