Pentatonic Scale Tips for Beginners:
1. Major Scales
Use major pentatonic scales built on the 1st, 2nd, and 5th scale degree of the major scale.
2. Minor Scales
Use the major pentatonic scale built from the 3rd, 4th, and 7th scale degree of the minor scale.
3. Pentatonic Scale Exercises
This is where you get creative. Practice these just as you would with any scale. 3rd, 4ths, displaced octaves. You will be able to create some great pentatonic licks before you know it! Listen to my favorite artist Kenny Garrett...and check out my book :)
4. Try making a Pentatonic Scale Solo
Only use the pentatonic scale when improvising over tunes. This is something you would want to do on the bandstand...however, it's an excellent practice in the shed.
