I wanted to improve my understanding on how to record a live performannce in Ableton Live with Push 2.
Yesterday, I found that if I simply pressed record to record a clip whilst recording in arrangement view - the recording would stop... so I resorted to externally recording whch seem 'not right'
indeed... I found a few ways to actually being able to record within Live.
so my basic idea of creating an audio track for the master, and arm it, and pressing record in arrangement view was correct.
but from here you have a couple of options to record a clip (which was my issue)
a) arm track, and hit clip in session view.
this makes sense , not sure why I didnt think of this yesteday....
but its not particularly handy, since means you need to (at least temporarily) switch views.
b) record button
so I didnt realise, but the push record button reacts differently depending upon which VIEW is shown in live ... not where you start the recording.
if you are in arrangement view (as I was yesterday) , you can clip record with shift & record or you can switch live to session view, and then hitting record will record a clip ... very handy!
the other issue I had yesterday, was know where i was when recording... this is important if you are using quantisation, since you need to know when the clip is going to start recording.
I found a useful way around this is to create an empty midi clip of the relevant length , and have the push in clip view - this way you are overdubbing into the clip - so you can see where it is quantised too.
Its funny, Ive had the Live and Piush (even push 1) for years, but there are stil things to learn on it.
