Demo196 Propagation by Air Layering|Nursery Operation|AgriCrops Production|How To|Paano Gawin

Air layering is an effective method of vegetative propagation used in agricultural crop production in the Philippines. This technique is particularly useful for plants that are difficult to root from cuttings. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Selection of Branch: Choose a healthy, vigorous branch from the parent plant. The branch should be about the thickness of a pencil.
Girdling: Remove a 1-inch wide strip of bark around the branch to expose the inner wood. This process is known as girdling1.
Rooting Hormone: Apply rooting hormone to the exposed area to stimulate root growth1.
Wrapping: Wrap the girdled area with moist sphagnum moss. Ensure the moss is tightly packed around the exposed area1.
Covering: Cover the moss with plastic wrap to retain moisture. Secure the ends of the plastic wrap with twist ties or string1.
Monitoring: Check the air layer periodically to ensure the moss remains moist. Roots should begin to form within a few weeks to a few months, depending on the plant species1.
Severing and Planting: Once a good root system has developed, cut the branch below the rooted area and plant it in a pot or directly in the ground
