The Toronto Police Service is launching a “Winter Watch” week of action focusing on pedestrian safety.

From Monday, January, 24, to Sunday, January 30, 2022, officers of the Toronto Police Service will focus on the “Big 4” driver behaviours that are known to cause injuries to all road users - speeding, driving aggressively, driving while distracted and driving while impaired.

This campaign will support Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan. Vision Zero acknowledges that collisions are inevitable, however, those where people are killed and seriously injured (KSI) are preventable and unacceptable.

Over the past three years (2019-2021) a total of 164 people were killed on Toronto’s roadways, 31% of these pedestrian fatalities occurred during the months of November to March when we see fewer daylight hours and there is reduced visibility for all road users.

During any traffic campaign it is important to engage with our communities and get people talking about the risks we take each day. One of those risks is crossing the road mid-block. Between 2019-2021, 44% of all collisions where a pedestrian was killed or seriously injured occurred mid-block. Motorists are also reminded to pay extra attention when making turns. Between 2019-2021, 28% of pedestrians that were killed happened when a driver was turning at a signalized intersection.
