In this video I break down the reasons why using an open source programming language is incredibly important in the data science world.

This boils to the following reasons:

1) Reproducibility
This basically means that your code serves as a paper trail, explaining to you and to others how you got from point A to point B. This enables a robust ecosystem of collaboration between yourself and team members.

2) Repeatability
Writing code in functions is very powerful. Things that you do frequently can be wrapped inside of functions, and then applied to future works. This ends up "snowballing" and saving tons of time.

3) Open Source flexibility
Open source basically means that the software is free with source code available to the public and with the option of users producing their own modifications and enhancements. Data scientists can "stand on the shoulder of giants" and use packages and functions written by others, or at least have the flexibility to quickly create their own solutions.

Your organization may not allow you to use these technologies all the time, but it is worth thinking about how to incorporate them in your work to complement your existing infrastructure.
