We all love pizza. Pizza is one food that no matter where you come from, you would always enjoy eating. We've heard the crazy things people have done for pizza and to their pizza. But not every time do we praise the people behind such ingenuity. Today we are going to change that by shining the light on a talented chef that is so good people travel from their countries just to have a bite of this pizza.
The legend we are talking about is no one other than Franco Pepe. He is one of Italy's preeminent pizzaioli, modern artisan with an age-old passion for pizza. He showcases this lifelong pursuit at his restaurant Pepe in Grani in Caiazzo, a town located about an hour northeast of Napoli. Each month, 14,000 people from 13 different nationalities walk down the narrow alleyway to where Pepe in Grani is located just to have a taste.
When Franco Pepe’s grandfather Ciccio opened a bakery in the small city of Caiazzo, Caserta in 1931, no one would have guessed it would turn into the most famous pizzeria in the world.
Franco opened his restaurant Pepe in Grani in 2005, just round the corner from his grandfather’s bakery. At the time, Caiazzo was not particularly known for its food, but thanks to the popularity of the pizzeria and Franco’s work with agronomist Vincenzo Coppola, the surrounding area has become famous for its artisanal producers, particularly its olive oil.
