British Council in partnership with University College London presents
Is climate change really that bad?
25 February 2021
About the lecture
There is no doubt whatsoever that our planet’s climate is changing rapidly,
epitomised by global warming, and that our actions are causing this shift. Consequences, though, are multi-causal and complex.
In his lecture, Prof. Kelman will explain that climate change-related disasters are often due to human decisions to create and perpetuate vulnerabilities, not merely because of a changing environment. While not every detrimental effect resulting from climate change can be dealt with, Prof. Kelman will discuss why we could and should be doing so much more to support people and their livelihoods under all forms of change. He will bring home the message that our own actions, or indeed, inactions, are proving to be more damaging and more terrifying – and that we, not the climate, are creating our own problems.
