A mystical mountain man with a divining rod comes down from the mountain and into a drought ridden town. For a bottle of whisky, some food and a place to stay out in the barn for the night the diving rod he carry`s with him will bend over the very spot where the water is underground and where the townfolk can start digging a well. If that doesn`t work he can dance around a little and make it rain. But the people must have absolute faith in him or it will not work. Waterwitches and Rainmakers were common in the old west and southern parts of the USA and other parts of the world in Summer months when there were severe droughts.
Banjo is in sawmill tuning, also known as mountain modal tuning. I play it two finger thumb lead on a long neck mountain banjo.
Rainmaker (Down from the mountain)- lyrics
Also known as Water-witch
written and performed by Dan D. Dirges
Rainmaker-Make it rain today
There`s no water in the deep well
This town has gone to hell
Down from the mountain-Out of the darkest sky
With eyes that shine in the night
And divining rod at his side
Willow tree-Bend your branches low
Water-Witch surely knows
Where the buried water lies in the earth below
We believe- We believe in thee
Without faith where are we
Withered up and dead like a hollow tree
Rain in the sky-Rain in the earth below
Water-Witch surely knows
Rain in the sky and in the earth below
Rainmaker-Make it rain today
For a few dollars and corn liquor
Out of the dust grow flowers
