The Biden administration, through the Justice Department, has sued SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, for allegedly discriminating against asylees and refugees in its hiring practices. The lawsuit claims that between September 2018 and May 2022, SpaceX discouraged these individuals from applying for jobs and rejected their applications, falsely citing export control laws as the reason. According to the Justice Department, asylees and refugees, whose permission to live and work in the U.S. does not expire, should be treated the same as U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents under these laws. The department is seeking civil penalties, back pay for those affected, and policy changes at SpaceX to prevent future discrimination.
