I bought this unique 'hand-spun' cymbal that some previous owner has written 'UFO' on in marker pen. It was cheap on TradeMe (NZ's version of eBay) and I couldn't resist. Obviously it's not a conventional cymbal form - it's basically a cone. It's very trashy-sounding and better with mallets than sticks I think.
I like to do these things in one take, so, despite the numerous dissolves, nothing has been cut or altered. I spent an hour playing and this is the 5th of 6 takes.
Miking the kit with a very cheap mic hung overhead on a light fitting and plugged into one of two Nikon DSLR cameras. Most of the sound is two older model Tascam field recorders, one each side about 1.5m in front of the kit. Some audio compression applied in Audacity.
There are notes elsewhere on the rest of the drums in this kit (search this channel for White Ghost), which are mostly Premier or at least English-made, with some being up to maybe 90 years old, and having calf heads.
