Dr. Jowallah emphasized the importance of assistive technology (AT) in fostering inclusive education, beginning with a personal story from 25 years ago about a visually impaired student he struggled to support due to limited resources. This experience highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by students with disabilities, especially in regions with limited access to technology.
He underscored the global need for AT, noting that over a billion people have disabilities, including 240 million children. However, barriers persist, such as lack of awareness, limited services, inadequate products, high costs, insufficient supply, and lack of research and development. Dr. Jowallah highlighted recent incidents, like American Airlines' mishandling of mobility aids, as examples of society’s lack of understanding of the value of AT.
He advocated for selecting AT that aligns with students' learning needs and creating universally accessible classroom environments to reduce stigma. He encouraged partnerships with families, centralizing AT information, and promoting global partnerships to support training and resources.
Finally, he introduced ChatGPT as an AT tool for educators, showing how it can be customized to create accessible learning materials and suggesting AI’s potential to enhance AT solutions. He called for advocacy to ensure that inclusion efforts serve all, not just a few, and emphasized the shared mission of improving lives through equitable access to assistive technologies globally.
