Today’s #OneMinuteDrumLesson - The Bounced Double Stroke 🥁
Technique for double stroke roll (RRLL), when the speed goes beyond what’s possible using a wrist movement for each stroke.
The first note is played from the wrist, the back fingers come away from the stick on contact with the drum and the stick tip bounces up like a ball, hinging at the fulcrum of thumb and index finger. The fingers then pull the butt end of the stick back into the hand for the second note.
Start by playing individual bounced doubles (not a roll), until it really starts to feel comfortable and natural. Then very steadily put them together into a roll, at the slowest tempo you can, and build bit by bit. As usual, haste is the enemy and patience a deadly weapon. This will probably take at least a few months of quality repetition to truly start feeling good, and a few years to master. Keep going! The time is going to pass anyway.
Go for quality and not speed. As the great Dave Elitch says, “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast”
