Leaking Turbocharger Wastegate
The wastegate is a valve on the turbocharger that allows excess exhaust gas to bypass the turbine impeller at high engine speeds. This prevents boost pressures from becoming too high. If cracks develop around the wastegate valve, the exhaust pressure is able to escape through the wastegate even when it is closed. This reduces the amount of exhaust gas available to spin the turbine, and thus lowers the potential boost that the turbocharger can deliver.
