Group Work in a Mathematics Classroom

Ingrid Hamso

Washington International School, Upper School Mathematics Teacher

Grade 10 Regular Math course

Ingrid's guiding question: Can group work promote a culture of thinking and learning in my classroom?
"Mrs. Hamso, I can't do this problem." "I have never seen this before." "I don't know how to start." "Help me! I can't do math." These and similar comments met Ingrid Hamso as she started with her 9th regular math class fall 2012. The students had little self-confidence in math and seemed completely unwilling to take risks. How could Ingrid make sure every student get the attention s/he needs? How could she build confidence and foster a willingness to take risks? She has tried through group work to build an atmosphere of trust where students dive into a challenge, feel responsible for one another and never meet a problem with the phrase, "But you have never taught us this!" Ingrid has found group work successful in trying to achieve these goals and decided to continue with group work in her two 10th regular classes. The video shows a group in one of her 10th grade classes building the formula for compound interest. These groups—which include mixed abilities—stay together throughout a particular unit. Ingrid tries to build some time in every class for them to work on relevant math problems.
