In 2007 the man himself flew to Shanghai and established Spicy Horse. They've chosen Unreal Engine 3 and focused on the core development, completely outsourcing the art assets.
In 2011 the game came out, having wonderful visuals, unrepeatable vibes, great combat mechanics and thrilling dark story.
The reviews flactuate between 70 and 75 on plarforms and media, and the reason is the lack of polishing. Even nowadays there are some issues, which could be fixed by following guides like this one: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...
I would give Alice: Madness Returns a solid 90%, because in 2023 it's still a unique experience. You dive into a beautiful world, where each enemy has unique mechanics and the combinations of them make you constantly develop new tactics. The characters are charming, and the plot is gripping.
It is a bit of a pain on Max Difficulty, but as usual, it is the only way.
