syphilis is one of the most common sexual diseases. And at the same time one of the most dangerous. For more than five centuries, mankind has been familiar with this terrible disaster. But even despite the fact that modern medicine has learned how to deal with the disease, scientists still cannot give an exact answer how and where Syphilis appeared.
In 1495, the inhabitants of Europe were faced with an unknown and strange disease, its symptoms were as follows: first, purulent ulcers began to appear in intimate places, then, after a while, the disease affected the bones, tissues and circulatory system. The disease changed a person beyond recognition and in the end came a slow and painful death.
For the first time, an epidemic of a new disease began in the troops of the French king Charles 8th, who were besieging Naples. And then, the multi-tribal mercenaries of the king and the soldiers of the military coalition opposing him brought a new infection to their families, which in a matter of years spread throughout the continent.
The French writer and historian Guy Bretton noted the possible causes of Syphilis:
Some doctors said that everything came from a woman who got infected from a leper;
others claimed it was the result of cannibalism and accused the soldiers of eating human flesh;
still others believed that bestiality, the sexual relationship of a person with a horse, sick with glanders, is to blame.
In 1530, the Venetian professor, physician and ostranomist GirOlamo Fracastoro published an essay entitled "Syphilis. A History of the Gallic Disease". In it, he first summarized medical knowledge about this disease. He wrote his work in the form of a mythological poem, in which the swineherd Siphil, who challenged the gods, received this serious illness as a punishment.
It is worth noting that not only the scientists of the Middle Ages did not know how and where Syphilis appeared. Specialists of our time, too, cannot answer this question 100%. However, several versions are put forward.
American version.
Among American scientists, the most popular version is that Syphilis was brought to Europe from the New World by the sailors of Columbus. Soviet scientist Lev Gromashevsky believed that sailors could have contracted Syphilis from local tribes, among whom bestiality was practiced.
The American version was also shared by the Spanish physician Diaz de Isla. He recorded in the sailors who returned from a long voyage, attacks of a previously unknown disease, which soon infected the inhabitants of Barcelona.
It is also known that 300 Spaniards, among whom there could well have been patients with Syphilis, joined the ranks of the army of King Charles the 8th, this explains the outbreak in the besieged Naples.
African version.
The strain of Treponema found on the African continent, which is the causative agent of Syphilis, could well be pumped into the Old World, from the depths of Africa. Its carriers could be infected African slaves, who were massively imported on merchant ships.
European version.
Some scientists believe that Syphilis existed in Europe even in ancient times. They refer to the descriptions of Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna, similar to the symptoms of the course of this disease. As a visible confirmation of the European roots of syphilis, art can act. So, on the busts of Socrates in the Vatican and Louvre museums, a typical syphilitic saddle nose stands out.
But syphilis may be much older than we think. Experts who have studied the remains of people who lived in the Bronze Age found bone destruction, changes in teeth and skull, characteristic of the symptoms of Syphilis.
On the territory of Russia, such remains were also found.
During archaeological excavations in the area of the former Khazar fortress SarkEl, syphilitic changes were found in 26 skeletons from 294 burials (5th-7th centuries).
The main route of transmission of Syphilis is sexual. Therefore, it is not surprising that the disease flourished in those communities where the moral standards left much to be desired.
The army of King Charles the 8th became a very favorable environment for the spread of this infection.
“In their campaign against Italy, the French acquired Naples and Syphilis. Then they were driven back and lost Naples, but Syphilis remained with them, ”the French philosopher and satirist Voltaire mockingly joked at the warriors.
The consequences of the campaign of French troops in Italy were as follows:
In the spring of 1496, a terrible epidemic of the "Neapolitan disease" struck Paris, and its consequences were so disgusting and fetid that the people had an aversion to sexual intercourse.
