Dealing with Subject Matter Experts is a part of the Instructional Designers's job. You need to clarify roles. Your job is to make the process smooth, make them feel like they're contributing. And also that this process isn't taxing on them. Because they have so many other things to do. So your job is to support as a person who is learning how to design learning with you.
