“It slices, it dices, it makes julienne fries” – the iconic sales tagline made famous in marking of the famous food processing appliance, the Veg-O-Matic. The phrase has become a punchline and the product name has been spun into spoofs from SNL (Super Bass-O-Matic 76
), Gallarger’s Sledge-O-Matic even a song written by Shel Silverstein and sung by Steve Goodman titled “Vegematic”. So, have these choppers and slicers evolved? Are they any better than the granddaddy of dicing or are we looking at the adage, “the more things change the more they remain the same”?
We’re here to find out if any of these things are worth owning, or if you should just pull out that knife and cutting board.

The current top selling veggie dicer is the Fullstar. They have various models, including a line dedicated to chopping and another designed to be an all-in-one. We also wanted to make sure to include the classic mandoline style of slicer; the top selling unit here is the Mueller. Lastly, we grabbed four food processor style choppers; all these models were manually operated except for the Black & Decker which was electric.
With a wide range of these devices we set out to not only answer the question of do these things actually work but which of these styles or products would be the best to purchase.
Our testing revealed a wide range of performance results – most of it bad – uneven chopped onions and garlic, smashed tomatoes, and devices that required instrumental force to operate. Parley it with the prerequisite of needing to prep most of the veggies with a knife and cutting board, then clean the unit once you’re done; it was challenging to find a silver lining – but it was there.
