According to Directive No. 45, as part of an operation codenamed "Braunschweig", the Germans had the task of seizing the oil fields of the Caucasus. The Red Army faced the task of blocking the Germans' way to the Alkhanchurt Valley, thereby preventing the enemy from reaching the Caucasian oil.
