How to make the most out of clinicals🩺🏥💉🩹
🏥Shadow, shadow, shadow!
Make sure your nurse and clinical instructor know that you are interested in seeing anything new or interesting happening on the floor, even if it’s not one of your patients.
🏥Transport is a resource!
Is your patient going down for an ultrasound? Even the OR?? Ask if you can join them! You will see SO much of the different parts of the hospital and learn A LOT!
🏥Dig into the chart!
Remember SBAR? What would you say if you were going to give a report on this patient? Find the H&P (history and physical) to see the initial provider assessment for this admission, and check out what’s happened since in the progress notes!
🏥Check out those labs.
Head back into the chart and look for abnormal values and trends. Based on the patient’s diagnosis, think about these trends and why they might be occurring!
🏥Call bells!
This might seem like a tedious task but it helps your nurse out and helps you gain experience interacting with patients. Practice makes perfect. Just make sure to check in with the nurse before you give that NPO patient a ginger ale
