Summary of this Tutorial
Computers and networked devices communicate by IP address. Trying to remember an IP address such as 72.213.54.34 every time would be difficult. To make it easier we use friendly words such as windows.com
DNS is used to map the word to the IP address. When there are issues with DNS, devices are unable to communicate.
The Nslookup command is a tool that can be used to help identify name resolution issues. It can be used to narrow the issues down to a client, local or remote DNS server.
Nslookup can also be used to verify DNS resource records such as
A Records
PTR Records
MX Records
CName Records
and so on.
Being able to troubleshoot and verify DNS settings is something all network and system administrators should know.
