The 787B is Mazda’s crowning motorsport achievement and our exclusive render has us wishing Mazda had homologated a couple for the street.
Whether you’re a sports car racing fan or not, the legend of the Mazda 787B has become so ubiquitous that you’d be hard-pressed to find a gearhead that doesn’t recognize it. Mazda had been the driving force behind the innovative Wankel rotary engine since the mid-60s, and while the RX-7 had been dominating its class in IMSA for nearly a decade in the 1980s, the Japanese automaker was finding top-flight prototype racing victory elusive.
That all changed in 1991 when Mazda’s newly developed 787B Group C prototype took an unexpected victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours. While Mazda’s success at La Sarthe firmly cemented the 787B and its wailing R26B 4-rotor engine as iconic, it was arguably the cars’ long-running inclusion in the Gran Turismo video game series that truly propelled the car into the mainstream cultural zeitgeist.
