The quick and chaotic American withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 allowed the Taliban to surge back to power, after more than two decades of war. In a new three-part documentary series from FRONTLINE, Taliban officials “gloat about their victory” against the U.S., the series’ director, producer and correspondent Martin Smith told Sue O’Connell. He also discussed what he learned from American officials, ahead of the premiere of part one of the series, “America and the Taliban.”
