Back to Basics - Pedestrian Safety Improvements, High Visibility Ladder Crosswalks

Mayor Bowser kicked off the summer paving season with a focus on improving pedestrian safety as part of #BacktoBasicsDC Week. The kickoff took place at First Street and N Street, SW, where the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) was installing new high-visibility crosswalk markings.
“As the District continues to grow, we need to be doing everything we can to build roads and sidewalks that keep people safe as they walk, bike, and drive around the city,” said Mayor Bowser. “Installing high-visibility crosswalks across the District is one way we’re maintaining infrastructure that will enhance pedestrian safety and change driver behavior.”
Installation of high-visibility ladder markings have been found to significantly increase driver yielding behavior – in some studies, up to 30-40% during daytime conditions – and reduce the number of collisions with pedestrians – in one study, a reduction of nearly 50%. Other studies have shown an average 25-40% reduction in crashes when high-visibility markings are added. DDOT has installed high-visibility crosswalks at heavily used locations in the past, but as part of its Vision Zero push, is bringing them to all kinds of crosswalks in the District.
“Since 2015, Mayor Bowser has pledged record funding to support improvements to the District’s infrastructure,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “All of our work is being done with one goal in mind: to enhance safety for District residents and visitors. Our crews will be working in all eight wards of the District and we encourage residents to watch for the no parking signs so we can get the work done without towing vehicles.”
Mayor Bowser’s proposed Fiscal Year 2020 – Fiscal Year 2025 capital improvements plan continues the record investments under PaveDC, a comprehensive plan to eliminate all roads in poor condition in Washington, DC by 2024. In addition to eliminating streets in poor condition, DDOT will continue to proactively maintain streets in excellent and good condition assuring that this major investment is well-preserved for years to come.
In addition to schools and rec centers, for the first time, the PaveDC marking map includes bike lanes. Along with pavement markings, residents can find out what roads and sidewalks are scheduled to be repaired and track the progress online. At least 72 hours before a road is paved DDOT will place signs to notify residents of no parking restrictions. Cars that are not moved in advance of paving will delay road work and be subject to ticketing and towing.
