Compared to the sixth edition, the APA Publication Manual's seventh edition, which debuted in October 2019, had a number of significant updates. The following are some of the main variations:
Bibliography and In-Text Citations:
Web Resources: For referencing online content, the 7th edition offers more precise instructions. It contains 114 instances from a range of sources, including novels, magazines, films, and social media.
Publisher Location: Books and comparable media are no longer needed to have the publisher location listed in references. For works with three or more authors, "et al." must appear from the first citation on in-text citations.
Up to 20 Authors: Previously restricted to 7, the reference record may now contain the surnames and initials of up to 20 authors.
URLs and DOIs: DOIs do not require the label "DOI:" and are formatted identically to URLs. "Retrieved from" is no longer included before URLs unless a retrieval date is required.
The Seventh Edition places a strong emphasis on speaking inclusively and avoiding bias. It is recommended that authors take into account factors relating to gender, race, and other aspects of identity.
APA Paper Format: The general layout of the paper is still the same, while the headings, typefaces, and spacing have been somewhat changed.
Mechanics of Style: The handbook offers more thorough instructions on punctuation, grammar, and writing style.
Citation Generator: To make reference formatting simpler, the 7th edition comes with a citation generator.
