Everybody wants more money for what they do and creatives aren't any different. I can relate to this, as a few years ago I was contracted to create an online course that went on to be very successful from a financial standpoint. So much so that I stopped to ask myself (much like writers who are striking now are asking themselves) why I wasn't entitled to share in the financial success beyond just what I was paid to do the work.
It's a hard pill for creatives to swallow sometimes -- that their work is often not rewarded the same way as an entrepreneurs or a business persons. That writing has become, like many other skillsets, a commodity. And that simply doing a good job doesn't put us on the same playing field as a corporate executive.
The reason why? They put skin in the game that we do not.
If the course I worked on wasn't successful, guess what? I'd still be paid the same. I imagine this is the same for writers on shows, they get paid whether the production is a hit or a flop.
But the reality is, in order to participate in the success of something it often means betting on ones self. How much are you willing to give up to blow up, in other words. And if the project isn't successful are we willing to take a hit? The answer for most of us (and at times in my life even for myself) is usually NO.
In this video I share some of my thoughts on the 2023 Writers Strike. What are yours?
Disclaimer: I want everyone to get paid, but sometimes it takes a little more finesse then just saying "I'm not going to work anymore." I don't think that serves anyone.
