Resize A Virtual Hard Drive In VirtualBox
In this tutorial, we will increase the size of a primary hard drive within a VirtualBox virtual machine, using a Windows host and guest. This option is not offered by default, and we will need to unmount the .vdi file, before entering a resize command via the Command Line, thereafter reattaching the .vdi file, and booting into the virtual machine. This doesn’t mark the end of the project, as the operating system initially fails to recognise the additional storage. Windows Disk Management utility is thwarted by a Recovery Partition which leaves our original volume and the new storage non-adjacent and therefore not amenable to merger. We therefore use a free download of EaseUS Partition Master to perform an initial merger, before returning to Windows Disk Management utility to complete the task.

Commands entered via Command Line:
cd “C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox”
VBoxManage.exe modifymedium “C:\Users\tff\VirtualBox VMs\TechFixFlix\TechFixFlix-disk001.vdi” --resize 60000
The first command assumes that you have installed VirtualBox to the default location. If you have customised to anything other than “C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox” you will need to reflect this in the first command.
The second command contains a number of variables which you will need to amend to reflect your specific virtual machine:
tff - Our user name. You will need to enter your user name (as it appears at Windows login).
TechFixFlix - The name of our virtual machine. You will need to modify this to the name of your virtual machine as it appears in the VirtualBox menu.
TechFixFlix-disk001.vdi - The name of our .vdi file. You will need to enter the name of your .vdi file.
60000 - The new size of our .vdi file, expressed in MB. You should enter a size of your choosing, ensuring that the virtual drive can be accommodated within your physical storage capacity.
In order to achieve a successful outcome, each of these variables must be amended to reflect your specific installation.
