What happens to our body immediately after death
Have you ever thought what will happen to your body after death in a minute, an hour, etc? Let's analyze the chronology of the processes occurring in the body after the death of the organism.
At the time of death
We often think of the moment of death as the moment when the heartbeat and breathing stops.
Currently, it is believed that our brain continues to "work" for 10 minutes after death. Therefore, our brain may be able to realize death at these moments.
1 hour
At the moment of death, all the muscles of the body relax, this condition is called primary lethargy. The eyelids lose tension, the pupils dilate, the jaw may drop, and the joints and limbs of the body become flexible.
With the loss of tension in the muscles, the skin sags, which can lead to the fact that prominent joints and bones of the body, such as the jaw or hips, become more pronounced. Muscles relax too, including those muscles that are usually tense around the clock.
Within a few minutes after cardiac arrest, a process called "death pallor" occurs, when the body begins to acquire a characteristic shade.
2-6 hours
Since the heart no longer pumps blood, gravity begins to attract it to the parts of the body closest to the earth.
Starting from about the third hour after death, chemical changes in the cells of the body lead to the fact that all muscles begin to stiffen. Interestingly, the old custom of putting coins on the eyelids of the deceased could arise from the desire to keep the eyes closed, since rigor mortis affects the eyelids the fastest.
7-12 hours
Maximum muscle rigor. At this point, the limbs of the deceased are difficult to move or manipulate. The knees and elbows will be slightly bent, and the fingers or toes may appear unusually curved.
At the 12th hour and beyond
After reaching the state of maximum rigor, the muscles begin to weaken due to ongoing chemical changes in the cells and internal tissue decay. This process, known as secondary flabbiness, occurs within one to three days and depends on external conditions such as temperature (Cold slows down this process).
During secondary rigor mortis, the skin begins to contract, creating the illusion that hair and nails are growing. Then rigor mortis disappears in the opposite direction - from the fingers and toes to the face - within 48 hours.
After the completion of secondary rigor mortis, all the muscles of the body relax again.
