Janus van Kasteren Wins Dakar 2023 - Martin Macik Second
Janus van Kasteren finally won the Dakar Rally for trucks on Sunday. The trucker from Veldhoven kept his big lead on the number two of the classification in the last stage. Van Kasteren rode unthreatened along the Persian Gulf to the finish in Dammam.
On Saturday, Van Kasteren's final victory was already certain. In the forelast stage he saw competitor Martin van den Brink with gearbox problems fall away from the classification. The Czech Martin Macik, who moved up to second place, was an hour and fifteen minutes behind the Veldhovenaar.
An impossible gap as it turned out, making Janus van Kasteren the best in the truck classification. With this, for the fifth time a Dutchman wins the Dakar Rally with the trucks. In all cases, that was a Brabander. Previous winners were Jan de Rooy, Hans Stacey and Gerard de Rooy.
Van Kasteren was one of the big favourites. This was due to the absence of Kamaz's Russian truckers, who have dominated the rally in recent years. Because of the war in Ukraine, the Russians were not welcome in Saudi Arabia. De Veldhovenaar gained steam in the second week and won three stages.
The Czech Alais Lopres initially seemed to control the rally, but after he had run over a spectator, he withdrew from the classification. From that moment on, Van Kasteren was the leader of the classification and did not relinquish that position.
