The Future of Reproductive Rights in America
What is the future of abortion access in America if Roe v. Wade is overturned?
In 1973, in the landmark case Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court established the legal right for women to have an abortion. Since then, there have been cases that have limited that right, including Planned Parenthood v. Casey, but the Court has always upheld the central framework of the decision: that women have a constitutional right to an abortion prior to viability, and throughout pregnancy if necessary to protect their health. With newly appointed Justices, the US Supreme Court this term has allowed Texas’s controversial “bounty” statute to stand and heard arguments in a case that can effectively overturn Roe and make abortion an issue for individual states to decide. We await the Supreme Court decision on this issue.
