How to resize / scale a video with FFMPEG | Relative resizing
Today, we show you another method to resize / scale a video using ffmpeg. The previous method we showed was about absolute resizing (setting the figures ourselves), we know show you relative resizing (i.e. defining as a proportion of the original) input.
ꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷ
EXAMPLES
ꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷ
❶ Resizing / scaling down from 1280 x 720 (HD) to HD /2 = 640 x 360:
→ ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "scale=iw/2:ih/2" output.mp4
with:
iw = input width = width of the input video = 1280
ih = input height = height of the input video = 720
❷ Resizing / scaling up from 1280 x 720 (HD) to HD * 1.4:
→ ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "scale=1.4*iw:-1" output.mp4
With -1 = let ffmpeg automatically calculate the output height using the same width/height ratio than in the original video
Note that you will always introduce noise and lose details when scaling up
