Andreas Zech (Dept. Galaxies, Etoiles, Physique et Instrumentation (GEPI), Obs. Paris-Meudon-Nancay)

Invited by Kumiko Kotera

Up until now, more than 70 active galactic nuclei, almost all of the blazar type, have been identified as emitters of very-high-energy gamma rays (in the TeV range) thanks to arrays of Cherenkov telescopes like the H.E.S.S. experiment in Namibia. The spectral and temporal information gathered from these sources allows us to better understand the extreme conditions in the emission regions. The basic tool to link observations to the physics of the sources is the modelling of the spectral distributions with models of radiative transfer. I will present a few recent observations in this field and discuss the interpretations with leptonic and lepto-hadronic models. The latter also predict a flux of high-energy neutrinos accompanying the electromagnetic emission, thus providing a direct link with astro-particle physics. Some predictions for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will also be discussed briefly.
