I'm in Benin, one of the most interesting countries in West Africa. This is a country the size of Bulgaria, where approximately 13 million people live. The official religion is Voodoo, but Catholics, Muslims and Voodoo believers live together in harmony. 400 years ago, a tribe escaping from being sold as slaves to the Portuguese discovered a secluded, safe living space on the shores of Lake Nokue. This tribe, which survived by fishing and escaped from slave hunters, called the new city they founded Ganvie, meaning WE SURVIVED.
In this video, I take a closer look at the lives of the people living above water in Ganvie. I paddle my pirogue through the canals that form the streets of the city, meet people, and taste Benin cuisine at the floating market. Enjoy!
