Noma is an infection of the face that affects children, 90 percent of whom die within the first few weeks of developing symptoms. This neglected disease impacts people worldwide living in poverty without adequate access to health care.
‘Restoring Dignity’ follows the journey of noma survivors from different regions of Nigeria over the course of a year. The survivors are children, teenagers, and adults who have lived for decades with the physical and psychological consequences of this disease.
Since 2014, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been supporting the Nigerian ministry of health, in the Noma Children's Hospital in Sokoto, the only hospital in the world entirely dedicated to noma patients. The program focuses on community outreach, active case finding in the region, health promotion, mental health support, and surgery. Four times a year, MSF sends experienced plastic and maxillofacial surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologist to perform surgeries for noma survivors.
This is a short version of the documentary 'Restoring Dignity,’ by filmmakers Claire Jeantet and Fabrice Catérini, produced by Inediz in collaboration with MSF.
