Filtration myths and misconceptions most fishkeepers still believe.
Myth 1
-You have to cycle your tank.
Pet shops that never filter
But it is how we create Long term equilibrium and ecosystem
#Myth 2: regardless of what you're using ...hob , sponge, canister or box, it is NOT A TRUE CYCLE even though we call it a "cycle". in most aquariums...
a cycle is complete, like ground water evap, rain, river , soak into ground...evap again...
we add food so we must take out that much at a minum.
Myth 4- ammonia is toxic to fish and plants. Part of this is true,
So below 6.5 or so it becomes mostly safe, and even at 7.0 or 7.4ph ammonium can be present in amounts 100x more than in the 8.4 ph tank.
To continue with myth 4: ammonia being toxic to all tanks....
even though fish cant take ammonia our plants actually prefer it in low concentrations,
so completing more of the natural real nitrogen cycle is ideal for planted tanks, if you dislike water changes
we can actually set up tanks so that deeper substrates if the tank is set up with a "cap" with this we can reduce or avoid adding root tabs or liquid plant fertz.
myth5 ... different types of filters have different ways of filtering the water.... theres really only 3 ways or types of filtration to every common consumer. style of filter...be it containers, hob, sponge or ugf. Biological, mechanical and or chemical
myth 6- there is one...or two bacteria that filter nitrogen
The nitrification process requires the mediation of thousands of species of bacteria and every tank develops a unique ecosystem based on temperature, ph, and other elements found in the water.
There are two distinct groups or types of benefical bacteria we care about in this hobby: the ammonia to nitrite the then nitrite to nitrates...not to mention the annerobic bacteria that can complete a true nitrogen cycle and return nitrates to ammonia...but most tanks and fish keepers wont need to know about these, unless they want to work with a filterless style tank....chrck my other videos for tons of info on that.
So... bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrites are hundreds if not 1000s of species and mutations from the following bacterial genera: (Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, Nitrosococcus, and Nitrosolobus)
and bacteria that convert nitrites m to nitrates are species within the following genus (Nitrobacter, Nitrospina, and
Nitrococcus ).
