The afternoon sun beat down on Lilly's braids as she watched her brother, Tom, triumphantly return from the creek. A small, wriggling form dangled upside down from his grubby hand. "Look what I got, Lil! Dinner!"
Lilly winced. Turtles were their grandfather's specialty, a tradition passed down for generations. But seeing the creature, its tiny legs flailing, made her stomach churn. Still, she couldn't dampen Tom's enthusiasm. "Let's get it cleaned then," she sighed.
Inside, Lilly expertly prepped the turtle while Tom bounced with anticipation. Grandpa's recipe was a secret, a melody of herbs and spices simmered low and slow. The aroma that filled the kitchen as the pot bubbled was undeniable. Even Lilly, usually squeamish, felt a rumble in her belly.
Dinnertime arrived. Lilly set the steaming pot on the table, the rich broth cloaking the tender meat. Tom, without a single complaint about vegetables this time, dug in. The first bite sent a look of pure bliss across his face.
"Wow, Lil! This is amazing! Grandpa would be proud." He devoured every morsel, his slurps punctuated by moans of delight. With each bite, a flicker of guilt crossed Lilly's mind, but the undeniable pleasure on Tom's face was contagious. Maybe, just this once, tradition wasn't so bad.
Later, under a star-studded sky, Lilly and Tom sat on the porch swing, their bellies full. Tom patted his stomach with a contented sigh. "Thanks, Lil. Best. Dinner. Ever."
Lilly smiled, a newfound appreciation for their heritage bubbling inside her. Maybe the taste of tradition, however strange it seemed, was something to savor after all.
