A pedestal shot can add a lot of 3D perspective.

I love the pedestal shot. I just think it's one of those shots that can really add a lot of perspective to your video. It's very similar to another shot on your tripod called the tilt shot, which is basically where you move the head of the tripod to change the angle which that camera's pointing at. This can add some motion, but doesn't add a lot of 3D perspective. On the other hand, the pedestal shot moves the camera up or down vertically to add a lot more perspective. It actually moves the camera itself as opposed to moving the angle of the camera.

But this is a Tripod Tip video, so I guess I gotta show you how to do this with your tripod. Well this is easy. You're going to want to use this part of the tripod, which is called the elevator column. But in this case you're going to use it to create motion. By loosening up the elevator nut, we're able to make a nice track for the elevator to follow. Simply move the camera up or down and you have a very nice, stable pedestal shot.

Or, unlike me, you're getting a very very jittery pedestal shot. If this is the case, then you're problem is that you're elevator nut is too loose and you're going to want to tighten that up and find a nice balance between movable and nonjitteryness.

Another thing that can help stabilization is where you put your hands on the tripod itself. Personally, I like to put one hand on the elevator column and another hand on the tripod head. This way I can keep the tripod steady and also control the motion.

Using this technique, you can add some perspective and really control your shots.
