Title: Using inter-brain and inter-body biofeedback in real-world neuroscience research
Abstract
I will discuss a research program at the interface of science, education, and art - and will show that real-time audio-visual feedback about the extent to which neurophysiological signals and/or movements become (de)coupled between dyads or groups of people can be used as a powerful tool to investigate how the human brain supports dynamic real-world social interactions. Additionally, preliminary findings underscore the potential of meaningful social biofeedback to help improve interpersonal alignment, opening up a world of possibilities for social feedback interventions to boost communication.
Biography
Suzanne Dikker’s work merges cognitive neuroscience, performance art and education. She uses a ‘crowdsourcing’ neuroscience approach to bring human brain and behavior research out of the lab, into real-world, everyday situations, with the goal to characterize the brain basis of dynamic human social communication. As a Research Professor at the Max Planck — NYU Center for Language, Music and Emotion (CLaME) and co-founder of the art/science collective Harmonic Dissonance, Suzanne leads various projects, including MindHive, a citizen science platform that supports community-based initiatives and student-teacher-scientist partnerships for human brain and behavior research.
