Today I am going to share with you a little-known money hack that can save you thousands of dollars, especially on travel, but a ton of other things as well. In fact, when I learned about this money hack I was shocked. So I am going to share the hack with you and also show you several examples that can literally save you thousands of dollars. So let’s jump right in.
Most people think that you have to be 50 years old or older to join AARP and many people dread seeing the fliers come in their mailbox because it means they are getting older. However, you can join AARP American Association of Retired Persons if you are 18 years or older just by calling in. You get a lifetime membership for only $200 and it can be shared with another adult. This means for $100 each you both have a membership. You might not realize how big of a deal this is until you see the examples that I am going to show you. This is a lifetime membership so each of these are just one example that compound over time.
For this example, I just randomly picked a hotel in New York City. It is the Hilton Garden Inn New York/Times Square Central. I chose 1 week from July 10th to the 17th with a king size bed. The standard rate if you are not a Hilton member is $301 per night and $280 if you are a member. For the exact same room for the same dates with the AARP discount is $265.00. That is $36 per night difference and for the week would be $252. With just this one stay you would more than cover the whole lifetime membership. This is just 1 example of many benefits. It is worth noting you should always check with the establishment you are booking with because sometimes in addition to AARP membership they also have their own restrictions, or age restrictions, so just that there is no disappointment. However, I know people who have been using this for a long time now and they rarely, if ever, have any issues. AARP has partnered with many other hotel chains as well and there are a wide range of discounts depending on which property you stay at and in which location. Check out their website for a full list of hotels. AARP offers many other travel related discounts as well. For example, if you need to rent a car for your trip, you can get up to a 30% discount when you rent a car from Avis or Budget rental car companies. Besides car rentals and hotel discounts, there are also discounts available on British Airways and several other popular cruise lines that offer gift cards and vouchers on tours. They even offer savings on rail travel and railway vacations in the US and in Europe. Members can use the AARP Travel center web portal or call them directly to search for discounts and packages.

If travel is not your thing, well you are in luck because AARP offers many other benefits to their members besides discounts on travel. For example, if you like to go out for dinner from time to time, you can use your AARP membership at some participating restaurants such as Outback Steakhouse, McCormick & Schmick’s, Schlotzky’s, Landry’s Seafood, Carrabba’s Italian Grill and many more. Most of these restaurants offer a 10% discount off of your bill. That can add up pretty quickly, especially if you dine out often. Let’s just say you dine out once a week and your average bill is $50, then you would save $5 with your discount. $5 times 4 times a month is $20. 20 x 12 is $240 a year which would more than cover the cost of your lifetime membership. Maybe you would like to go to a movie after dinner.
