You never know when something disastrous is going to strike your computer, whether it be a water spill, accidental deletion of documents, or the motherboard dying. One way or another, something will eventually go wrong with your files, and you don't want to be that person who doesn't have a backup. By backing up, you can make sure that you're not at risk of losing your important data.
Time Machine
As a Mac user, Apple packs in a program called Time Machine, which gives you a native way to back up your files. Time machine will allow you to backup your mac to an external drive, and it is free to use which is great.
The downside of using an external drive, is that your files aren't completely safe. Unlike cloud backups, a physical hard drive is prone to physical damages and loss of data due to corruption.
How to use:
Open Time Machine
Click 'Select backup disk'
Select the drive you just connected, select encrypt backups, and then use disk
Time Machine will now backup your entire computer
What's happening here is Time Machine is taking a snapshot of your entire computer whenever it's time to backup. The first backup will most likely take a long time, because it has to copy all the files on your computer, but after that the backups will be quite fast because it will only have to edit any changes to the existing files or copy over the new ones created on your computer since the last backup.
SyncMate
While Time Machine offers a great way for you to backup your computer, it doesn't allow you to Sync any of your backups between your other devices. For that, you should also check out SyncMate. Not only is it a solid way to backup your computer - the paid option allows for additional functionality that really make your digital life easier.
The free version of SyncMate will allow you to sync and backup your contacts and calendar, while the paid version will include backing up and syncing of your photos, videos, texts, calls, and folders on your Mac and iOS or Android device. Yes, that's right, all of this will work with an android phone too.
SyncMate is really a great addition if you are looking for another option to use with Time Machine because it doesn't just backup your stuff, but it will actually sync everything between your mac and phone. I highly recommend getting the paid version because it's something that will make your life easier once you do.
Cloud Options
There is also the option of backing up your computer in the cloud as well. The most popular options for Mac users are google one, iCloud, and Dropbox. Cloud storage has it's own pro's and con's when compared to using an external hard drive.
The downfall of using the cloud as a backup storage is you have to make sure you have a stable internet connection if you need to access anything. While using the external hard drive can be cumbersome to carry around everywhere, if you have it in your possession, you can always access the files regardless of where you are and if there's internet or not.
With that being said, Cloud storage is a phenomenal option in terms of backing up your computer.
They all have very competitive pricing amongst each other, with a free tier in addition to several paid tiers. With the pricing models nearly identical, you will have to make the choice based on which one fits your workflow best. For most Mac users, I would imagine that iCloud is going to be the best choice for you, as it will natively integrate into the workflow with your computer.
