Every year, several hundred thousand earthquakes occur on the globe, about a hundred of them are destructive, causing death of people, destroying entire megacities.
Our country is included in the list of states with seismic instability and the devastating earthquake in Turkey makes one wonder how prepared Kazakhstan is for such disasters.
Kazakhstan is located in a zone of seismic activity, so earthquakes of various strengths occur in the country. However, Kazakhstan is relatively rarely subjected to powerful earthquakes, since most of the territory is located on a stable seismic basement.
One of the strongest earthquakes in Kazakhstan occurred on January 4, 1911 in the Kostanay region, with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale. This earthquake caused significant damage and loss of life.
More recent earthquakes that occurred in Kazakhstan were generally weaker. For example, in 1988, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Western Kazakhstan, which destroyed several buildings and killed 78 people.
The Government of Kazakhstan takes measures to ensure the safety of the population in the event of earthquakes. In particular, building codes and regulations in the country provide for mandatory measures to protect buildings and structures from possible seismic effects, as well as drills and exercises on evacuation and first aid.
