The Treasures of Montezuma is another incarnation of the match-3 puzzle.
Cancun, Mexico, in 1935, where a young doctor, Emily Jones, works at the Archaeological Museum. Her interest is the find in the museum of an ancient stone slab. She eventually comes to the conclusion that solving the tile-matching puzzles will lead her to a secret Aztec city. Emily's journal serves as a record of her discoveries, and newspaper articles and other documents keep the story moving along at the right pace.
The objective of the tile matching game is to collect all of the sparkling gems in a level before time runs out on the ticking pocket watch. The number required for the level is displayed above the main grid. Swap one gem at a time, choosing pairs that swap with one click, slowly removing all those that contain gems. The entire board can be shuffled twice, and hints can be bought with points.
The number of gems needed to clear a stage increases by five for each level, reaching a maximum value of 200. Therefore, the player must work much faster and wiser in later levels to get all the gems. Luckily, there are power-ups that are activated with the help of gold stars obtained by completing each level. Aztec statue totems of six colors and other modifiers act on the level when the player completes two tiles of the same color. For example, a fire totem (red) bombs a pile of tiles, and a time totem (orange) adds time to the countdown clock.The game also features time-limited mini-games that provide more opportunities to earn gold stars. These include a simple "accuracy challenge" (click on the stars flying across the screen) and concentration (find two matching tiles), among others.
The game has five chapters and 41 overall levels. After beating the game once in adventure mode, a difficult mode becomes available with higher goals and a faster pace.
