Farmers have used them for centuries to fend off wild predators, such as wolves, bears, leopards etc. They are the best herd protection dogs. They are bonded to one person but they are very friendly to kids in the family as well. They will protect the family no matter what.
The things that makes Kangal unique from other LGD's is that, Kangal will keep an eye on every incoming person or animal, and it will analyse their movements. Sometimes if other person or animal is not a threat, they will never even bother to bark.They protect the herd from distance, not by moving together with the herd like border collies. They can smell the wolf or jackal from a significant distance, and they will attack immediately if the predators enter their territory.
four to six Kangals can protect almost a herd of five hundred sheep . Working Kangals are very independent animals, they will patrol about 1 to 2 Kilometres of area, to make sure the cattle aren't under any threat .
Wolves have been a problem for the thousands of years that Turkey's farmers have been raising sheep. They tend to attack alone or in pairs, usually earlier in the day. One man was killed and four others were injured on a farm to the east of the Yukseks' back in June 2013, but for the most part it's the sheep that are at risk, not only from wolves, but thieves too.

Again as we have mentioned in our previous videos so many times, that it depends from wolf to wolf and dog to dog when the two come face to face. Not every Kangal will stand its ground against a wolf, and not every wolf will stand against a Kangal. There will be occasions when a kangal will come out as a winner, and then would be occasions where a wolf will dominate Kangal.
The Kangal dog in this video was brave enough, to stand its ground against 3 wolves and fending them off. Otherwise when out numbered , a single dog has very little chance of survival against the wolves. This Kangal's temperament is one, that is often found in working Kangals from top lines. Kangals are hands down one of the best livestock guarding dogs, and will go to any extent to protect the livestock against wild animals.
